The customs house and the price of everything
Freiburg never built itself a town hall grand enough to brag with: it built a customs house instead. The Kaufhaus went up in the early 1500s, painted the colour of dried blood and watched over by statues of four Habsburg emperors, standing above the arcades like auditors. Every barrel of wine and bolt of cloth that entered the city passed under their gaze, was weighed, measured, taxed, and only then allowed to be sold on the square below…

Despite the name, the Pont Neuf is the oldest bridge still standing over the Seine in Paris. When it opened in 1607 it was a small scandal of openness: no houses built on it, just a clear view of the river, and of everyone else crossing.
