Audio Guide Chambéry

app, one-time €4.99

Chambéry sits at the Alpine crossroads where France, Italy, and Geneva converge, shaped for centuries by the House of Savoy. Its compact old town holds a Gothic castle, arcaded streets funded by an Indian-campaign fortune, and a cathedral covered wall-to-wall in trompe-l'oeil. The four cast-iron elephants at the city's central fountain remain the most unexpected thing you'll see all day.

    Fountain of the Elephants

Mocked when it was unveiled in 1838, this 17.65-metre column topped by a bronze general and ringed by four cast-iron elephants is now Chambéry's defining symbol. It honours General-Count Benoît de Boigne, who made his fortune in India and then bankrolled much of the city's 19th-century rebuilding.

  • 02

Castle of the Dukes of Savoy

From a Roman fort to the seat of one of Europe's most powerful dynasties, this castle has been the engine of Chambéry since Count Amadeus V made it his capital in 1295. Its towers also contain France's largest carillon, 70 bells cast by the Paccard foundry and spanning six full octaves.

  • 03

    Sainte-Chapelle of the Castle

Built in Flamboyant Gothic style between 1408 and 1430, this chapel held the Turin Shroud for 76 years before it was moved to Turin in 1578, drawing pilgrims from across Europe. The interior stonework and stained glass were made to impress, and they still do.

  • 04

    Saint-François-de-Sales Cathedral

The cathedral's most startling feature is entirely painted: 6,000 square metres of trompe-l'oeil cover the walls, creating the illusion of carved stone and sculpted ornament where there is none. The building began life as a modest Franciscan chapel around 1420 and only became a cathedral in 1779.

  • 05

    Rue de Boigne

General de Boigne donated 300,000 Piedmontese livres in 1822 so that Chambéry could cut this arcaded boulevard straight through its medieval core. Designed in the Turin style by his own brother-in-law, it links the ducal castle to the elephant fountain in one elegant straight line.

  • 06

Les Charmettes, House of Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Rousseau described the years he spent at this quiet hillside house between 1736 and 1742 as "the brief happiness of his life," and the ideas he developed here fed directly into the Social Contract and Emile. The 18th-century Savoyard farmhouse and its gardens are preserved almost exactly as he left them.

  • 07

    Chambéry Railway Roundhouse

Built between 1906 and 1910 with a metal framework inspired by Gustave Eiffel, this 108-metre-diameter rotunda once sheltered 72 locomotives on a single turntable. It survived Allied bombing in 1944, escaped demolition in 1984, and is now a listed monument with an interpretation centre inside.
