Audio Guide Concarneau

app, one-time €4.99

Concarneau is a working Breton fishing port built around a granite-walled island citadel that has been fortified since the 11th century. The Ville Close still rises straight out of the harbour water, its ramparts modernised by Vauban in the 17th century and now enclosing a fishing museum, a belfry, and a festival that has celebrated sardine fishers since 1905. Beyond the walls, the town holds the world's oldest operating marine station and a beach with a submerged fossil forest visible at low tide.

    Walled Town of Concarneau

Bertrand du Guesclin seized this granite islet in 1373, and the walls he found have only grown thicker since, reaching 8 to 10 metres high after Vauban reworked them in the 1690s. The Ville Close is the core of everything Concarneau is, a fortified island still sitting in the middle of an active fishing harbour.

  • 02

    Ramparts of the Ville Close

Walking the full circuit of the ramparts puts you on walls up to 3 metres thick, built from local granite over successive centuries starting around 1285. From the top you look down on the fishing port on one side and the open bay on the other.

  • 03

    Fishing Museum

The museum's star exhibit is the Hémérica, a full-size ocean trawler you can board inside the building, housed in former military barracks built between 1844 and 1849. More than 12,000 objects trace the fishing trade from Concarneau to the wider world.

  • 04

The Fishing Port and the Auction

Concarneau's criée, founded in 1893, processes around 3,700 tonnes of fish each year across 15,000 square metres of floor space, clad in Trégunc granite. The quay it anchors was built between 1927 and 1938 and the Festival des Filets Bleus, celebrating sardine fishers, has run here since 1905.

  • 05

    Marinarium

Founded in 1859 at the initiative of Napoleon III, this is the oldest marine station in the world still in operation, where Laurent Chabry conducted embryology experiments as early as 1887. The public Marinarium opened in 1972 and now holds 11 aquariums including a 120,000-litre grand basin.

  • 06

    White Sands Beach

At low tide the beach exposes a submerged fossil forest of ancient oaks, one of the more unexpected things the Breton coast quietly holds. The fine white sand itself is rare this far north, and on a clear day the Glénan archipelago sits on the horizon.

  • 07

    Keriolet Castle

A Russian princess, Zénaïde Narischkine-Youssoupoff, bought a 15th-century Breton manor in the 1860s and rebuilt it as a neo-Gothic showcase using local granite and Kersanton stone, mixing Renaissance and Breton decorative motifs throughout. Restoration only began in 1988, so the castle carries its history visibly.
