Èze is a medieval village perched 429 meters above the Mediterranean, wedged between Nice and Monaco on the French Riviera. Perched Medieval Village of Èze
Local tradition holds that the village name may trace back to the Egyptian goddess Isis, worshipped here by Phoenician traders long before the Romans arrived. Settled since around 2000 BC, the village sits 429 meters above the sea and has passed through Celto-Ligurian, Roman, Saracen, and Savoyard hands before becoming part of France.

02
Exotic Garden of Èze
The garden was planted in 1949 directly on the rubble of a château that Louis XIV ordered demolished in 1706, turning a deliberate act of military destruction into one of the Riviera's most striking viewpoints. Botanist Jean Gastaud, who also founded the Jardin Exotique de Monaco, designed the layout across four hectares of former fortress walls.
-
03
Nietzsche Path
Friedrich Nietzsche descended from the train at Èze-Bord-de-Mer in December 1883 and climbed this 2.1-kilometer mule path every day while drafting the chapter 'Of Old and New Law Tables' for 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra'. The trail rises 350 to 400 meters and still follows the same route he walked, now officially renamed in his honor.

04
Church of Our Lady of the Assumption
The church was first consecrated in 1772, seven years before construction was actually finished, because the Bishop of Nice apparently could not wait. Built between 1764 and 1778 by Italian architect Antonio Spinelli for Duke Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy, it holds relics of Saint Germain and has been a classified Historic Monument since 1984.

05
The Poterne
In 1543, the fleet of Ottoman admiral Barbarossa, allied with France, attacked Èze and briefly captured it despite the presence of this fortified gate. Built after 1388 by the House of Savoy, the double gate stands 429 meters above sea level and was partially destroyed in 1706 during the War of the Spanish Succession.
-
06
Chapel of the Holy Cross (Chapel of the White Penitents)
The oldest building in Èze, founded in 1306 by a lay brotherhood that cared for the sick and leprous during plague outbreaks, this chapel also hosted the vote of April 1860 in which the people of Èze chose to join France. A Memento Mori inside the simple rubble-stone nave serves as a quiet reminder of why the brotherhood existed in the first place.
-
07
Astrorama, Fort de la Revère
Built between 1882 and 1885 at 696 meters as part of France's post-Franco-Prussian War coastal defenses, the fort was armed with 16 cannons and offers sightlines stretching from Italy to the Estérel massif. It later served during the Second World War and has since been converted into a public astronomy site.
