Audio Guide Honfleur

app, one-time €4.99

Honfleur is a small Norman port town where shipwrights once built France's largest wooden church and Impressionist painters set up their easels along the old harbour. The Vieux Bassin, flanked by tall slate-roofed houses, has drawn artists from Boudin to Monet for nearly two centuries, and that creative pull has never quite faded.

    Saint Catherine's Church

Shipwrights built this church after the Hundred Years' War using naval carpentry techniques and timber from local forests, giving the nave roof the shape of an inverted ship's hull. It is France's largest wooden church, and its separate bell tower was positioned across the square specifically to limit fire risk.

  • 02

    The Salt Granaries

Built in 1670 using stones salvaged from Honfleur's own demolished city walls, these two surviving warehouses stored salt under the royal Ferme Générale des Gabelles. Their chestnut-timber roofs echo the shipbuilding craft of the town, and a third granary burned down in 1892.

  • 03

    Eugène Boudin Museum

Founded in 1868 with Boudin's own support, this museum holds more than 2,500 works and the world's third-largest collection of his paintings. It moved in 1924 into the chapel of a former Augustinian convent, which still frames the galleries today.

  • 04

Chapel of Our Lady of Grace

The original chapel, founded in 1023 by Richard II of Normandy, collapsed into the sea in 1538 after a cliff eroded beneath it, leaving only the altar and a statue of the Virgin standing. The current building, reconstructed between 1600 and 1615, is packed with ex-votos left by mariners who felt they owed it their lives.

  • 05

    La Ferme Saint-Siméon

From around 1840 to 1870, this Norman farmhouse inn became an informal meeting point for painters including Monet and Boudin, giving it a credible claim to being a birthplace of Impressionism. The 7-hectare orchard and half-timbered buildings have changed little since those working visits.

  • 06

    Les Maisons Satie

Erik Satie was born here on 17 May 1866, and the three red half-timbered houses that make up the museum give no warning of the eccentric, walk-through scenography inside. When it opened in 1998, the installation used sound and light to recreate the surrealist atmosphere Satie built into his compositions.

  • 07

Museum of Ethnography and Norman Folk Art

The building served as a prison before it became a museum in 1901, and the funds to buy and convert it were raised through a lottery in 1898. Nine themed rooms now trace traditional Norman life across furniture, costumes, and maritime objects inside a late 16th-century half-timbered structure.
