Audio Guide Le Puy-en-Velay
app, one-time €4.99
Le Puy-en-Velay is a city shaped by volcanoes and faith: three dramatic volcanic plugs pierce the skyline, each topped by a chapel, a statue, or a medieval fortress. It is the traditional starting point of the Via Podiensis, the most-walked French route to Santiago de Compostela, and its cathedral has drawn pilgrims for over a thousand years. The city also gave the world a green lentil with its own protected designation and a herbal liqueur distilled from verbena grown on volcanic soil.

Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe Rock and its Chapel
A chapel perched on an 82-metre needle of volcanic rock, reached only by climbing 268 steps, was commissioned in 961 after a bishop returned from a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The pre-Romanesque oratory he ordered built there still stands, decorated with frescoes from the 10th to 12th centuries.
-
02
Cathedral of Our Lady of Le Puy
Built on a volcanic rock that was already a Gallo-Roman sacred site, this Romanesque cathedral with Byzantine polychrome stonework has anchored one of France's great Marian pilgrimages since at least the 5th century. Its cloister alone holds 154 sculpted capitals depicting angels and fantastical creatures across galleries of sandstone and volcanic stone.
-
03
Statue of Our Lady of France
The 22.7-metre iron statue crowning Rocher Corneille was cast from Russian cannons captured during the Crimean War, a deliberate gesture turning instruments of war into a monument to peace. It was inaugurated in 1860, partly to atone for the burning of an earlier Black Virgin during the Revolution.
-
04
Fortress of Polignac
Sitting on a basaltic hillock about 5 km from the city, this medieval stronghold has a 32-metre keep and 800 metres of ramparts, and was powerful enough that King Louis XI confiscated it from the Polignac family in 1467. The site has been continuously occupied since the 10th century, when early wooden defences guarded the northwestern approach to Le Puy.
-
05
Saint-Laurent Church
This Gothic church, founded in 1221 for the Dominicans, is one of the rarest complete Gothic buildings in the entire Velay region. Inside its tall volcanic-stone nave rests an enfeu, the funerary monument holding the entrails of Bertrand du Guesclin, constable of France and one of the most celebrated military commanders of the Hundred Years War.
-
06
Distillery of Velay Verbena, Pagès
An apothecary named Joseph Rumillet-Charretier put the first bottle of Verveine du Velay on sale on 1 January 1860, and the distillery he founded still produces 1.8 million bottles a year from the same recipe. The 1906 building, classified as a Monument Historique, was decorated with stained glass by Charles Borie and doubles as a museum visitors can tour.
-
07
Place du Plot
The square's name is a double redundancy: 'Plot' comes from the Latin 'planum' meaning 'place,' making it essentially 'Place Place.' A pillory was erected here in 1548 by city consuls specifically to shame drunkards in public, and the fountain at its centre, built in 1246, is the oldest in Le Puy-en-Velay.
