Audio Guide Riquewihr
app, one-time €4.99
Riquewihr is a small walled village in Alsace whose medieval streets, half-timbered houses, and surrounding vineyards have changed so little since the 16th century that much of it looks frozen in time. Its fortifications date to 1291, and the Grand Cru Schoenenbourg vineyard climbing the slopes above town has been documented since 1301, with roots possibly reaching back to Roman agriculture.

01
The Dolder
The name 'Dolder' means 'highest point' in Alsatian dialect, and this 25-meter tower built in 1291 has served as city gate, watchtower, and belfry across seven centuries, surviving even the Thirty Years' War. Since 1911 it has housed a museum on Riquewihr's fortified history.
-
02
Tower of Thieves
Built in 1291 with walls up to 5 meters thick, this 18-meter tower functioned as both prison and seat of seigneurial justice under the Counts of Württemberg until the end of the Ancien Régime. Today it holds a museum displaying the instruments used inside it.

03
Castle of the Dukes of Württemberg
Before this Rhenish Renaissance château was built between 1539 and 1540, the site held a robber-knight stronghold destroyed by Rudolf of Habsburg in 1269. Count George of Württemberg-Montbéliard replaced it with sandstone walls, mullioned windows, and a heraldic staircase turret.

04
Grand Cru Schoenenbourg
Voltaire once owned vines here, and the vineyard itself has been documented since 1301, with viticulture on these steep slopes possibly predating that by over a thousand years to Roman times. It became one of Alsace's 51 official Grands Crus in 1992.

05
Rue du Général-de-Gaulle
Originally called the Grande Rue, this street was fortified in 1291 and prospered again in the 16th century when the winegrowers' guild funded a run of half-timbered mansions along it. The Dolder tower anchors one end; the town hall anchors the other.
-
06
Sinne Fountain
Wolf Schrapp carved this Renaissance fountain from local sandstone around 1560, and its primary practical function was gauging wine containers, making it part of the viticulture economy rather than mere civic decoration. The lion atop it carries the coats of arms of the lords of Horbourg and Württemberg.
-
07
Liebrich House (Storks' Courtyard)
A stork's nest on the gable gave this 1535 building its nickname, but the detail most visitors overlook is that the initials and date 'MDXXXV' are still engraved on a window, marking when it was rebuilt for Wilhelm Bart. A surviving Gothic window inside shows an even earlier structure was incorporated.
