app, one-time €4.99

Bamberg is a medieval city on seven hills in northern Bavaria, left largely intact by the Second World War and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Its skyline is shaped by four cathedral towers, Benedictine hilltop monasteries, and fishermen's houses perched over the Regnitz River. The city also happens to be Germany's unofficial capital of smoked beer, a style produced here by methods unchanged for centuries.

Bamberg Cathedral St. Peter and St. George

This is the only cathedral in the world to hold the tomb of a pope north of Rome: Clement II has lain here since 1047, making it a pilgrimage site for a very different reason than most. Founded by Emperor Heinrich II in 1007 and consecrated in its current form in 1237, the four-towered cathedral blends Late Romanesque and early Gothic styles across a nave that stretches 99 metres.

  • 02

    Old Town Hall

According to local legend, the bishop refused to grant the townspeople any land, so they built their town hall on an artificial island in the middle of the Regnitz River instead. The trompe-l'oeil Baroque frescoes painted on its facade include a cherub's leg that appears to hang off the building in three dimensions.

  • 03

    Little Venice

The name dates only to 1842, coined by two journalists in a travel book, yet the half-timbered fishermen's houses lining the Regnitz here are genuinely medieval, with the oldest cores going back to the 15th century. Wooden balconies once served as drying racks for nets and today jut over the water in much the same way they always have.

  • 04

    St. Michael's Monastery

Look up at the vault of this Benedictine church and you will see 578 painted plant species, a kind of medieval botanical encyclopaedia spread across the ceiling known as the Himmelsgarten. Founded in 1015 and rebuilt in Baroque style by the Dientzenhofer brothers after a fire in 1610, the monastery now also houses the Franconian Brewery Museum in its former brewery buildings.

  • 05

    New Residence Bamberg

Built in two phases between 1602 and 1703, the Neue Residenz served as the seat of Bamberg's prince-bishops and contains over 40 state rooms, including the Kaisersaal, a 264-square-metre hall of late Baroque painting. Step through its rose garden, redesigned by Balthasar Neumann in 1733, for one of the best views over the Old Town's rooftops.

  • 06

    Historic Brewery Tavern Schlenkerla

The building at Dominikanerstraße 6 began its life around 1310 as a Dominican house chapel, became a brewery in 1678, and has been run by the same family line since 1866. The Rauchbier served straight from wooden barrels here is made with malt dried over open beechwood fire, giving it a flavour that regularly startles first-time visitors.

  • 07

Brandmal (Memorial for the Victims of the Witch Hunts)

Before this sculpture was unveiled in 2015, no public monument in Bamberg's city centre had ever acknowledged the witch trials of 1612 to 1631, among the most severe in the Holy Roman Empire. Made from weathering Cor-Ten steel and acrylic glass and measuring 7.4 by 2.9 metres, its glowing irregular openings are designed to suggest wounds that have not fully healed.
