Audio Guide Füssen

app, one-time €4.99

Füssen sits at the southern tip of the Romantic Road, where the Bavarian Alps rise sharply from the foothills and two of the most visited castles in the world stand within walking distance of each other. The town itself carries over a thousand years of history, from a Roman road station on the Via Claudia Augusta to a medieval lute-making capital, all compressed into a compact old town beside a thundering river weir.

    Neuschwanstein Castle

King Ludwig II never actually lived here: he spent only 172 days in the castle before dying under mysterious circumstances in 1886, and the rooms were opened to paying tourists just weeks later. Built from 1869 as a personal fantasy rooted in Wagnerian opera and medieval legend rather than any real historical castle, it went on to inspire the Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland.

  • 02

    Hohenschwangau Castle

Ludwig II grew up in these rooms, watching workers build Neuschwanstein on the ridge directly opposite, a view that shaped his obsession with idealized medieval architecture. The Neo-Gothic structure stands on foundations first recorded in 1090, rebuilt by Crown Prince Maximilian II between 1833 and 1837 with lavishly painted interiors illustrating regional legends.

  • 03

    High Castle

Before the bishops of Augsburg turned this hilltop fortress into a summer residence around 1500, the site had already served as a Roman military fort guarding the Via Claudia Augusta. Its most disorienting feature is a set of trompe-l'oeil murals on the courtyard facades that paint fictitious windows, cornices, and towers onto flat stone walls.

  • 04

    St. Mang Monastery Church

The monastery traces its origin to a hermitage founded around 725 by Saint Magnus, an itinerant monk from St. Gallen, making this site nearly as old as Füssen itself. Its Magnus Crypt contains frescoes dating to the 10th century, among the oldest surviving painted cycles in Bavaria.

  • 05

    Pilgrimage Church of St. Coloman

This Baroque church, designed by Wessobrunn master Johann Schmuzer between 1673 and 1678, stands isolated in an open meadow with Neuschwanstein on the slope behind it, an alignment that makes it one of the most photographed spots in the region. The site began as a plague cemetery chapel during the Black Death of 1347 to 1352, and pilgrims have been coming ever since.

  • 06

Anna Chapel with Füssen Dance of Death

Painted in 1602 by Jakob Hiebeler and commissioned by the abbot of St. Mang monastery, this cycle of twenty scenes on ten wooden panels is one of the oldest surviving dance-of-death sequences in Bavaria, showing Death claiming figures from every rung of society. The panels are small enough to be easily overlooked inside the chapel, which is precisely what most visitors rushing to the castles do.

  • 07

    Lech Waterfall

What looks like a natural cascade is actually a partly engineered weir built between 1784 and 1787 to divert water power, replacing a natural cataract that had existed since the end of the last Ice Age some 12,000 years ago. The gorge below it, cut by glacial meltwater into hard Wetterstein limestone, is entirely natural and protected under the EU Natura 2000 network.
