Audio Guide Ludwigsburg
app, one-time €4.99
Ludwigsburg is Germany's best-preserved Baroque city, built from scratch in the early 18th century around one of Europe's largest palace complexes. With over 450 rooms, a theatre older than any other still-standing palace stage on the continent, and gardens that draw half a million visitors a year, the city wears its ducal ambitions openly. What surprises most visitors is how much history beyond the palace is packed into a compact city centre.

Ludwigsburg Residential Palace
Built from 1704 as a hunting lodge and ballooning into a 450-room complex, this palace holds the oldest still-operating palace theatre in Europe. Duke Eberhard Ludwig designed the surrounding city as a symmetrical Baroque grid to frame it, earning the complex the nickname the Württemberg Versailles.

02
Blooming Baroque
These 30-hectare gardens surrounding the palace were redesigned in 1953-1954 for the palace's 250th anniversary and now pull up to 550,000 visitors a year. The grounds combine formal Baroque parterres with an English landscape section and host everything from pumpkin exhibitions to music festivals each season.
-
03
Ludwigsburg Market Square
The square was planned from 1704 as the civic heart of a purpose-built Baroque city, and it shows: two churches face each other across a 110 by 80 metre expanse, with a fountain bearing Duke Eberhard Ludwig's statue at the centre. Master builder Donato Giuseppe Frisoni realised the design along strict Italian Baroque principles.
-
04
Hohenasperg Fortress
The hill has been occupied since Celtic times around 750 BC, and the fortress built above it became notorious as a prison for political detainees, earning the local nickname Demokratenhügel (Democrats' Hill). Today it still functions as a prison hospital while also housing a museum tracing that long, layered history.
-
05
Central Office for the Investigation of National Socialist Crimes
Founded in 1958 directly after the Ulmer Einsatzgruppen Trial exposed how many Nazi crimes had gone unprosecuted, this Ludwigsburg institution became the main coordinating body for all such investigations in West Germany. It is housed in a complex that includes a Baroque gatehouse from 1760 and a former women's prison.
-
06
Synagogue Square
The outline of the synagogue consecrated here in 1884 is traced in stone pavement, a deliberate reminder that the building was destroyed on 10 November 1938. Suitcase sculptures and acacia trees planted during a 2013-2014 redesign give the square a quiet, specific weight.
-
07
Fairy Tale Garden
Albert Schöchle came back from a trip to the Netherlands in 1957, saw a fairy-tale park, and two years later opened more than 40 animated storybook scenes inside the Blühendes Barock gardens, including a functioning Rapunzel tower built as an artificial ruin called the Emichsburg. The idea was partly financial: the garden needed more visitors to stay solvent, and it worked.
