Audio Guide Rüdesheim am Rhein

app, one-time €4.99

Rüdesheim am Rhein sits at the heart of the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, where steep vineyard slopes meet the river and a 12.5-meter bronze Germania keeps watch from the hills above. The town has been a crossroads of Rhine trade since the Middle Ages, and that layered past still shows in its cobblestones, castle ruins, and living Benedictine abbey.

    Niederwald Monument

A failed assassination attempt during its 1883 dedication nearly changed German history: a bomb planted under the seating area failed to detonate, sparing Kaiser Wilhelm I and Bismarck. The 38-meter monument, crowned by a 12.5-meter Germania statue, was built to commemorate the founding of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War.

  • 02

    Drossel Alley

Otto Hausmann wrote the song 'Zu Rüdesheim in der Drosselgass'' in 1887 specifically to reverse a slump in tourism, and it worked well enough that the alley now draws around 3 million visitors a year. The 144-meter cobblestone lane began as a storage quarter for Rhine boatmen in the 15th century, accessible only through narrow passages.

  • 03

    Brömserburg

Despite bearing the Brömser family name, the family never actually lived here. The 12th-century castle, with walls up to 5 meters thick and a 27-meter bergfried, served as a customs stronghold controlling Rhine trade and now houses the Rheingau Wine Museum.

  • 04

    Abbey of St. Hildegard

The neo-Romanesque abbey above Eibingen, completed in 1904, was personally funded by Fürst Karl zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg to revive the Benedictine tradition that Hildegard of Bingen established in the 12th century. Its twin towers of 40 to 45 meters still anchor the Rheingau skyline, and the community remains active today.

  • 05

    Ehrenfels Ruin

Built between 1208 and 1220 specifically to replace an earlier customs post, Burg Ehrenfels controlled the notoriously treacherous Binger Loch stretch of the Rhine in tandem with the Mouse Tower. French troops destroyed it in 1689, and the ruin has stood untouched on the riverbank ever since.

  • 06

    Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet

The building itself pre-dates Columbus: parts of the Brömserhof manor trace back to around 1310, and its halls now hold more than 350 self-playing instruments, from a Kleemeyer flute clock to a Hupfeld Phonoliszt. Founded in 1969 by Siegfried Wendel, it attracts up to 130,000 visitors a year.

  • 07

    Eagle Tower

This late 15th-century powder tower is the sole survivor of Rüdesheim's entire medieval ring wall, with every other tower dismantled over the centuries. Originally it stood right on the Rhine bank; land reclamation has since pushed the waterfront further out.
