Audio Guide Zwickau
app, one-time €4.99
Zwickau is a Saxony city with a double identity: it gave the world Romantic composer Robert Schumann and later became the cradle of German automotive manufacturing, from the early Audi to the Trabant. The Cathedral of St. Mary alone spans nearly 900 years of history, from a Romanesque hall church to a Gothic landmark where the Reformation played out in real time.

01
Cathedral of St. Mary
Though Zwickau was never a bishop's seat, this church earned cathedral status anyway, and its 87-meter Baroque tower caps a building that began as a Romanesque hall church around 1175. The interior holds a 1479 altarpiece by Michael Wolgemut, teacher of Albrecht Durer, alongside a 77-stop organ.
-
02
Zwickau Town Hall
In 1522, Martin Luther preached from a window of this building to a crowd estimated at between 14,000 and 25,000 people, one of the largest gatherings of the early Reformation. The attached Jakobskapelle, built between 1473 and 1477 from red Cainsdorf sandstone, survives in its original late-Gothic state.
-
03
August Horch Museum Zwickau
August Horch founded his automobile works in Zwickau in 1904, and the same factory floors where the first Audis rolled out later produced the Trabant. The museum, opened in 2004 on that original site, now spans 6,500 square meters and holds over 200 exhibits tracing more than 120 years of Saxon car-making.
-
04
Robert Schumann House
Robert Schumann was born on 8 June 1810 in this house on the Hauptmarkt, where his father also ran one of Germany's early paperback publishing businesses. The museum holds the largest Schumann memorabilia collection in the world, including original manuscripts and a concert hall for 140 people.

05
Gewandhaus
Built between 1522 and 1525 for the Clothmakers' Guild, this sandstone building blends late Gothic stepped gables with early Renaissance arcade detailing in a combination rare for its era. It became a theater in 1823 and recently emerged from a 19.5-million-euro renovation completed in 2020.
-
06
Priests' Houses
The oldest of these four surviving medieval row houses has a ceiling beam dated by dendrochronology to 1264, making the ensemble the oldest preserved urban residences in Saxony. Originally home to clergy of St. Marien, then to teachers of the Latin School next door, they now form a museum of everyday medieval city life.
-
07
Lower Granary
Completed in 1480/81 and verified by dendrochronology of its roof timbers, this 64-meter-long late Gothic storehouse served simultaneously as a grain depot and an arsenal. Its monumental roof ridge stands 27.5 meters high, and after a 2010 to 2014 restoration it now houses the city library.
