Audio Guide Aigues-Mortes
app, one-time €4.99
Aigues-Mortes is a perfectly preserved medieval walled town rising from the Camargue marshes, built by King Louis IX as France's gateway to the Mediterranean for the Crusades. Its 1,640-meter circuit of ramparts and towers still stands almost exactly as it did in the 13th century, and the surrounding saltworks turn a vivid pink each summer thanks to salt-loving microorganisms.

01
Tower of Constance
A Protestant woman named Marie Durand was imprisoned inside this tower for 38 years, and scratched the word "REGISTER" (resist) into the stone wall of her cell. Built between 1240 and 1248 for Louis IX, the circular limestone tower has walls 6 meters thick and was the anchor of France's first royal Mediterranean port.

02
Ramparts of Aigues-Mortes
Walking the full 1,640-meter circuit of these 13th-century walls puts you on the same stones that Louis IX's crusading armies filed past before embarking in 1248. Built under Philippe III and Philippe IV after Louis died, the ramparts reach 11 meters high and enclose the town in an almost unaltered medieval footprint.

03
The Saltworks of Aigues-Mortes
Every summer the 10,800-hectare salt ponds surrounding the town turn a startling shade of pink, the color coming from halophilic microorganisms living in the brine. Salt production here traces back to the 4th century BC, and the site now shelters over 200 bird species, including flamingos.

04
Statue of Saint Louis
The bronze king standing at the center of Place Saint-Louis cost 16,000 francs in 1849, depicts Louis IX wearing a crown and coat of mail with a marine anchor at his feet, and was sculpted by James Pradier, the same artist who made the figures on the base of the Vendome Column in Paris.

05
Church of Our Lady of the Sands
This Gothic church is the oldest religious building still in use in Aigues-Mortes, predating even the town's ramparts: it was completed between 1252 and 1260, and before the stone structure there was an earlier church built from wood and reeds. Protestants sacked it in 1575 during the Wars of Religion, yet it survived and was fitted with 31 contemporary stained-glass windows in 1991.

06
Carbonnière Tower
Standing alone in the marshes outside the city walls, this 16-meter watchtower was described in a 1346 text as "the key to the kingdom in this region" because it controlled the only road into Aigues-Mortes across the wetlands and collected tolls from every traveler passing through. It is technically on the commune of Saint-Laurent-d'Aigouze, meaning most visitors drive past it without stopping.

07
Tower of the Burgundians
In January 1421 the Burgundians seized Aigues-Mortes by the treason of its governor, then slaughtered the Armagnac soldiers they captured inside this tower and reportedly filled the tower with their bodies, salted to slow decomposition, a grim echo of the town's salt trade. The tower is 18 meters tall and forms part of the same rampart circuit built under Philippe III and Philippe IV.
