Audio Guide Arles
app, one-time €4.99
Arles punches well above its size: a compact Provençal city where a Roman amphitheatre that once held 25,000 people still hosts bullfights, and where Vincent van Gogh produced around 300 paintings in a single year. The layers run deep, from Julius Caesar's colony to a Frank Gehry tower clad in 11,000 steel panels.

01
Arles Amphitheatre
After Roman games ended, medieval inhabitants literally moved inside, turning the amphitheatre into a fortified village complete with houses and churches before excavations cleared it in the 19th century. Built between 80 and 90 AD under Emperor Domitian, the 136 by 107 metre oval still seats crowds today for bullfights and concerts.

02
Saint-Trophime Church
The relics of Saint Trophimus were only transferred here in 1152, giving the church its name and its status as one of the key stops on the Camino de Santiago. The Romanesque portal and 42-metre bell tower are among the finest surviving examples of their kind in Provence.

03
LUMA Arles
The site was Arles's largest employer by the early 20th century, with over 1,800 railway workers repairing steam locomotives where Frank Gehry's 56-metre tower now stands. The LUMA Foundation began transforming the Parc des Ateliers in 2013, wrapping the new tower in 11,000 stainless-steel panels.

04
The Alyscamps
The name traces back to the Latin for Elysian Fields, and the site served as Arles's main burial ground for nearly 1,500 years, drawing medieval pilgrims who believed Saint Genesius was martyred here. Van Gogh and Gauguin both painted the cypress-lined avenue in 1888, during the brief weeks they worked side by side.

05
Montmajour Abbey
Long before the abbey rose, the rocky outcrop of Montmajour was already a necropolis, its rock-cut tombs pre-dating the year 1000. Founded in 948 by the aristocrat Teucinde, the Benedictine community eventually controlled 56 dependent priories and claimed possession of a fragment of the True Cross.

06
Cryptoporticoes of the Forum
These U-shaped underground galleries, built around 30 to 20 BC to level a sloping hillside for the Roman forum, were later used as a prison during the French Revolution, holding captives in the same vaulted corridors that once underpinned the administrative heart of Roman Gaul.

07
Réattu Museum
In 1971, Pablo Picasso donated 57 drawings to this former Knights of Malta priory, making it one of the first museums in France to hold a dedicated Picasso collection. The building had already made history in 1965 as the first French museum to establish a photography department.
