app, one-time €4.99

Albi is a city of red brick and outsized ambition, built along the Tarn River in southern France. Its cathedral is so fortress-like that visitors routinely mistake it for a castle, and the medieval episcopal quarter around it earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2010. The city also happens to be the birthplace of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose entire life's work is collected just steps from where he was born.

    Sainte-Cécile Cathedral of Albi

Built to project Catholic authority after the Albigensian Crusade, this fortress-like cathedral holds the largest painted interior surface of any cathedral in Europe, covering 18,500 square metres of walls and vaults. Construction began on 15 August 1282 and took nearly two centuries to complete.

  • 02

    Toulouse-Lautrec Museum

The world's largest public collection of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's work sits inside a former bishops' palace whose brick walls reach up to seven metres thick. The Palais de la Berbie was built as a fortress between 1228 and 1308, and the museum has occupied it since 1922.

  • 03

    Pont-Vieux

Decided upon by a joint assembly of canons, clerics, and the local viscount between 1035 and 1042, this 151-metre bridge was fortified during the Hundred Years' War with a central gate-tower and drawbridges at each end. It is one of the oldest bridges still standing in France.

  • 04

Collegiate Church of Saint-Salvi and its Cloister

This church stands on a site believed to hold the tomb of Saint Salvius, an early bishop of Albi who died between 574 and 584, and a Carolingian crypt beneath it still preserves 10th-century painted decorations. The cloister dates to 1270 and mixes Romanesque and Gothic stonework side by side.

  • 05

    Grand Théâtre des Cordeliers

Architect Dominique Perrault built this 900-seat theatre on the exact plot where Albi's prison stood until it was demolished in 1969, wrapping the 10,200-square-metre complex in a copper-coloured metal mesh that glows at night. It opened in 2014.

  • 06

Hôtel du Bosc (birthplace of Toulouse-Lautrec)

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born here on 24 November 1864, inside a private mansion built directly into Albi's 12th-century city ramparts, two of whose medieval towers are still embedded in the structure. The address is now the street named after him.

  • 07

    Hôtel Reynès

Pastel merchant Roger Reynès built this Renaissance mansion between 1520 and 1530 at the peak of the woad-dye trade, incorporating a tower from a demolished medieval hospital to signal his family's rising status. When the Reynès family was ennobled in 1583, they raised the tower even higher to make the point clearer.
