Audio Guide Sarlat-la-Canéda

app, one-time €4.99

Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in France, its golden limestone streets largely untouched since the Hundred Years' War. Built around a 9th-century Benedictine abbey in the Dordogne, the old town is a compact labyrinth of Renaissance mansions, Gothic churches, and lauze-roofed lanes that has doubled as a film set for decades.

    Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral

The abbey church that anchored Sarlat for centuries only became a cathedral in 1317, when Pope John XXII carved out an entirely new diocese, and its 43.5-metre Romanesque bell tower predates that elevation by several hundred years. A Baroque organ added in 1752 still fills the Gothic nave today.

  • 02

    House of La Boétie

This Italian Renaissance facade, built between 1520 and 1525, stood out so sharply from the Gothic town around it that neighbours must have stared. It was the birthplace of Étienne de La Boétie, the humanist whose friendship with Montaigne and whose essay on voluntary servitude made him one of the 16th century's most provocative thinkers.

  • 03

    Medieval City of Sarlat

Sarlat owes its exceptional state of preservation partly to a long period of economic stagnation after the Hundred Years' War, which left the medieval fabric intact by accident rather than design. The Malraux Act of 1962 then made the old town one of France's first protected restoration zones.

  • 04

    Liberty Square

The square became the civic heart of Sarlat in 1273, when the consuls bought houses here to establish a common house, a direct assertion of bourgeois power against the abbey that had founded the town. Its Saturday market still draws the surrounding Périgord Noir in force.

  • 05

    Old Church of Saint Mary

A medieval Gothic church that fell out of use by 1794 sounds like a ruin in waiting, but architect Jean Nouvel had other ideas: in 2001 he fitted it with monumental steel doors and a panoramic elevator, turning a 12th-century shell into a covered market with views over the rooftops.

  • 06

    Lantern of the Dead

Built around 1180 and known variously over the centuries as the 'Tour des Maures' and the 'Tour Saint-Bernard,' this 10-metre Romanesque cylinder in the old cemetery has puzzled historians for generations: whether it served as a sepulchral chapel, a signal lantern, or something else entirely remains genuinely debated.

  • 07

    Executioner's Tower

Of the eighteen towers that once ringed Sarlat's medieval walls, only two survive after most were demolished around 1850. This one kept its name because for most of the 17th and 18th centuries it was the official residence of the town executioner, constructed during the Wars of Religion in 1579 to 1580.
