Fougères sits in the borderlands of Brittany, anchored by one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Its steep valleys, half-timbered squares, and Gothic churches tell a story of merchant ambition and frontier defence that stretches back nearly a thousand years.

Fougères Castle
Henry II Plantagenet destroyed the original fortress in 1166, prompting Raoul II de Fougères to rebuild entirely in stone, a decision that produced a two-hectare stronghold with 13 towers and three defensive walls. It remains one of the most substantial medieval fortresses in Europe and drew writers including Victor Hugo and Balzac.

02
Belfry of Fougères
Brittany's oldest surviving belfry was not built by a bishop or a baron but by the town's own cloth merchants, who began raising its square base in 1397 to signal their independence from both Church and local lords. Its bell, Rolland Chapelle, has been marking civic time for over six centuries.
-
03
Saint-Sulpice Church
Construction on this church began around 1380 and was not finished until 1760, meaning the choir was completed in Baroque rocaille style while the nave remained Flamboyant Gothic, producing a building that spans nearly four centuries of taste in a single space. A carved figure of the legendary fairy Mélusine appears inside among the furnishings.

04
Marchix Square
The name comes from the old French word for market, and this square has been a trading hub since the Middle Ages, when weekly livestock exchanges funded the nearby priory of the Trinity. The surrounding half-timbered houses, some dating to the 15th century, are classified as Monuments Historiques.
-
05
Public Garden (Place aux Arbres)
This terraced garden above the old town was created in 1766 after the spur defending the Porte Saint-Léonard was levelled, and the surrounding parish cemetery was cleared in 1782 to make room for its expansion. Today it holds a fougerarium with over 50 species of fern and a panoramic view across the castle below.
-
06
Fougères State Forest
Before it became a royal forest and then French state property, this 1,602-hectare beech wood marked the ancient border between Brittany, Maine, and the Celtic tribes of the Veneti and the Diablintes. It is now classified as a ZNIEFF type II ecological zone, home to 49 recorded bird species.
-
07
Emmanuel de la Villéon Museum
The 16th-century half-timbered house at 51 rue Nationale survived fires in 1710, 1734, and 1750 that erased nearly every other building of its type on the street, making it the last porch house standing. Inside, over 120 post-impressionist works by Fougères-born Emmanuel de la Villéon have been on display since 1981.
