Audio Guide Vitré
app, one-time €4.99
Vitré is one of Brittany's best-preserved medieval towns, its skyline still dominated by the triangular towers of a castle first raised around the year 1000. The streets were built on linen and hemp money: a brotherhood of overseas merchants founded in 1472 funded the Gothic church, the timber-framed mansions, and much of what you see today.

01
Vitré Castle
Started as a wooden fort around 1000 and repeatedly burned down before being rebuilt in stone, this triangular fortress eventually became so secure that it served as a refuge for the Breton parliament during the Wars of Religion. Today it houses both a museum and the town hall.
-
02
Church of Our Lady of Vitré
The merchants who exported hemp and linen across Europe poured their profits into this church, financing its construction from the 15th to the 16th century. The result is a 50-metre Gothic spire, a seven-gabled southern façade, and an outdoor pulpit rare enough to stop visitors in their tracks.
-
03
Ramparts of Vitré
Built between 1220 and 1240 on the model of the Paris walls of Philippe-Auguste, these ramparts were upgraded two centuries later with horseshoe-shaped cannon towers to meet the new threat of artillery. They still enclose the old town much as they did when they held off a siege in 1589.

04
Historic Center: Arcaded Streets and Overseas Merchants' Hotels
The Confrérie des Marchands d'Outre-Mer, founded here on 10 March 1472, traded hemp and linen as far as Flanders, England, and Spain, and the porched ground floors of their mansions were built to double as shops. The wealth they generated shaped nearly every stone façade still standing in the centre.

05
Château des Rochers-Sévigné
Madame de Sévigné used this Gothic manor as her country retreat from 1644 onward, writing 294 letters from its grounds, 262 of them addressed to her daughter. The estate's gardens were laid out in the formal style associated with André Le Nôtre, and a peculiar echo wall still surprises visitors.
-
06
Rue de la Baudrairie
The street takes its name from the baudroyeurs, leather craftsmen who worked here in the Middle Ages, and its timber-framed houses from the 15th to 17th centuries carry Renaissance stone doorways and sculpted heads that most visitors walk past without looking up.
-
07
Rachapt Suburb (Faubourg du Rachapt)
The neighbourhood's name is said to come from the Hundred Years' War, when residents literally bought their suburb back from the English. Founded around the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Nicolas in 1222, it later gained an Augustinian convent in the 17th century and remains a distinct quarter outside the ramparts.
