Audio Guide Bernkastel-Kues

app, one-time €4.99

Bernkastel-Kues sits in the heart of the Middle Moselle Valley, where steep slate slopes produce some of Germany's most celebrated Rieslings. The town's medieval market square, ringed by half-timbered houses, looks much as it did four centuries ago, and a ruined castle keeps watch from the ridge above.

    Market Square Bernkastel

One of the best-preserved medieval market squares in the Moselle region, framed by half-timbered houses from the 15th to 17th centuries and anchored by a Renaissance town hall built in 1608. The whole ensemble survived the centuries largely intact, making it feel less like a museum piece and more like an active town centre that simply never got demolished.

  • 02

    Landshut Castle

Before the medieval castle rose here in the late 13th century, a late Roman fort called Princastellum already guarded this rocky spur 60 metres above the Moselle. The castle was eventually abandoned after a fire in 1692, and its roofless shell now frames sweeping views over the valley below.

  • 03

St. Nicholas Hospital / Cusanus Foundation

Founded in 1458 by the philosopher-cardinal Nikolaus von Kues to house exactly 33 elderly poor men, a number chosen to mirror the years of Christ's life, the late Gothic complex still functions today. Kues bequeathed his entire private library here, making it one of the three largest medieval manuscript collections in Rhineland-Palatinate.

  • 04

    Bernkasteler Doctor

According to a 14th-century account, the gravely ill Prince-Elector Boemund II of Trier recovered after drinking wine from this hillside plot and declared it his 'true doctor.' The vineyard covers just 3.22 hectares on slopes of up to 70 percent gradient, and its Devonian slate soil has shaped the character of the Rieslings grown here ever since.

  • 05

    Parish Church of St. Michael

The church's 56-metre tower was originally part of Bernkastel's medieval town fortifications, built into the wall rather than standing apart from it. Inside, a carved Calvary group dating to 1496 survived centuries of conflict and remains in place today.

  • 06

    The Little Pointed House

Built in 1416, this half-timbered house has a ground-floor width of just 2.20 metres, with each upper storey cantilevering further out over the street. The overhang was not an architectural quirk but a calculated response to tax assessments based on ground-floor footprint.

  • 07

    Graach Gate

Of the eight gates that once pierced Bernkastel's medieval walls, this is the only one still standing. French troops partially demolished it in 1689, and when it was rebuilt in the early 18th century the town repurposed it as a prison, a role it held from 1714 onward.
