Audio Guide Celle

app, one-time €4.99

Celle is one of Germany's best-preserved timber-framed towns, with nearly 500 half-timbered houses lining streets that have changed little since the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg held court here from 1433. The castle they left behind still stands with its moat and Renaissance chapel intact, and a short walk away sits the oldest half-timbered synagogue in Lower Saxony.

    Celle Castle

What began as a fortified tower around 980 grew over centuries into the four-winged Baroque residence that still sits behind its moat today. The dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg made it their permanent seat from 1433, and the Renaissance chapel inside holds 78 paintings and 55 sandstone reliefs that survived the Reformation largely intact.

  • 02

    St. Mary's City Church

Consecrated in 1308 and anchoring Celle's skyline with its 74-metre tower, this Gothic hall church is also where Queen Caroline Mathilde, exiled Danish queen and later subject of a Netflix drama, was buried in the ducal crypt. Inside, a 1613 altar retable and a reconstructed 1687 organ round out seven centuries of accumulated craftsmanship.

  • 03

    Hoppener House

Built in 1532 and considered the oldest surviving house in Celle with habitable upper floors, the Hoppener House is a riot of Renaissance wood carving: mythological figures, grotesque masks, and six projecting gable stories. A fresh restoration completed in 2024 brought it back to something close to its original appearance.

  • 04

    Old Town Celle

Founded in 1292 by Duke Otto the Strict around a castle and a parish church, Celle's old town grew over roughly 600 years into one of Europe's largest ensembles of timber-framed buildings. Nearly 500 listed Fachwerk houses survive here, spanning styles from the late 15th to the early 19th century.

  • 05

    Bergen-Belsen Memorial

Around 120,000 people from across Europe were imprisoned at Bergen-Belsen; roughly 52,000 died there, including Anne Frank. The 55-hectare memorial site today includes a Documentation Center, a stone obelisk, and mass grave mounds that visitors walk among in silence.

  • 06

    Celle Synagogue

Built around 1740, this is the oldest surviving half-timbered synagogue in Lower Saxony, constructed just three years after Jews in the Principality of Lüneburg were formally granted the right to build synagogues. Damaged during the Reichspogromnacht in 1938, it was restored and reopened in 1974 and still serves as a place of worship.

  • 07

    Castle Theatre Celle

Founded around 1674 by Duke Georg Wilhelm and his French wife Éléonore Desmier d'Olbreuse, this Baroque theatre tucked into the northwest tower of Celle Palace is one of the oldest continuously used Baroque theatres in Europe. It sat largely dark after the duke's death in 1705 until Queen Caroline Mathilde revived and redecorated it between 1772 and 1775.
