Audio Guide Wolfsburg
app, one-time €4.99
Wolfsburg exists because of a car: the city was founded in 1938 around the Volkswagen factory, and that industrial origin still shapes everything here, from the striking glass Car Towers of the Autostadt to a planetarium paid for with a VW Golf deal. Yet the same city commissioned Alvar Aalto to design a church, a cultural house, and a theater, giving it an architectural depth that catches most visitors off guard.

01
Autostadt
Volkswagen built an entire themed world next to its factory, and the centerpiece is a pair of 50-meter glass towers that store 400 cars each and deliver them to buyers in under two minutes. Opened in 2000 on a former coal and oil storage site, the 28-hectare complex also hosts the ZeitHaus museum with around 260 vehicles from over 60 brands, including competitors.

02
phaeno
Zaha Hadid's deconstructivist science center floats 16 meters above street level on concrete cones, a form so radical that its original budget of 67 million euros ballooned considerably before it opened in 2005. It was Wolfsburg's deliberate bet on becoming something more than an automotive company town.

03
Volkswagen Factory Wolfsburg
The factory that defines Wolfsburg stretches across 6.5 square kilometers with a 60-kilometer internal rail network and four chimneys each 125 meters tall. Its foundation stone was laid by Adolf Hitler in 1938, and it later became a cornerstone of West Germany's postwar economic recovery.

04
Holy Spirit Church
Alvar Aalto designed this Lutheran church in 1958 after winning an international competition, and it remains one of only two churches he built in Germany. The sweeping copper-clad roof and Douglas fir interior create a calm that feels entirely different from the industrial city outside.
-
05
Wolfsburg Castle
The castle that gave Wolfsburg its name was first recorded in 1302, built by the von Bartensleben family on the Aller River with keep walls up to 3 meters thick. The male line of that family died out in 1742, and today the Weser Renaissance structure serves as a cultural center with museums and galleries.

06
Planetarium Wolfsburg
This planetarium exists because of a Cold War trade: Volkswagen supplied 10,000 VW Golf cars to East Germany in exchange for a Zeiss projector, and the city used it as the seed for a full planetarium that opened in 1983. Its 15-meter dome seats 144 people and is the largest in Lower Saxony.

Memorial to Forced Labor at the Volkswagen Factory Site
Inside the Volkswagen main plant, a former air-raid shelter with a reinforced concrete ceiling 2.5 meters thick now holds a permanent exhibition on the roughly 20,000 forced laborers who worked here during World War II. The memorial was inaugurated in 1999 by Volkswagen's own works council and apprentices, housed within the original bunker structure.
