app, one-time €4.99
Eckernförde is a compact Baltic Sea town whose history stretches back to 1197, shaped by centuries of fishing, seafaring, and a decisive 1849 naval battle fought right in its bay. Its old town packs medieval churches, a converted smokehouse museum, and a harbor that still smells of smoked sprats into a short walk along the water.

01
St. Nicolai Church
During renovations between 2016 and 2019, workers uncovered medieval frescoes that had been hidden inside this church for centuries. Built around 1210 as a simple Romanesque brick structure, it was transformed into a three-aisled Gothic hall church by 1530 and still holds a Baroque altar and a Renaissance pulpit.

02
Eckernförde Harbor
A Danish king built a fortress at the mouth of this bay before 1200 to control a north-south trade route, and the harbor has been the town's economic heartbeat ever since. From the 15th to 17th centuries it thrived on fishing, shipbuilding, and a locally brewed beer called Kakabille; today it hosts the Eckernförder Fischmarkt and an Aalregatta.

03
Old Town Eckernförde
The name Eckernförde appears in writing as early as 1197, and the fortress the Danish king built here was recorded in King Valdemar II's land register in 1231. The streets around the Rathausmarkt and Kirchplatz still follow the medieval layout, protected by a design statute adopted in 2022.

Museum Eckernförde (Old Town Hall)
The timber-framed building dates to the mid-15th century, when it served as either a town hall or an armory; a 29-meter Bürgersaal was added to the upper floor in 1588 for civic gatherings. Since 1987 it has held 700 square meters of exhibition space covering the town's history, with a striking external staircase added in 1836.

05
South Beach and Promenade Vogelsang
Eckernförde became a seaside resort as early as 1831 with the opening of the Marie-Louisen-Bad in Borby, making it one of the oldest bathing destinations in Schleswig-Holstein. The Vogelsang Park alongside the beach was created in 1870 and 1871 by filling in a low-lying area, and the whole zone is now part of a Natura 2000 protected habitat covering more than 8,000 hectares.

06
Old Fish Smokehouse Eckernförde
At its peak around 1925, Eckernförde had about 37 smokehouses; by 1999 only one complete ensemble survived, and this is it. Built in 1912 and 1913 with brick construction and tall chimneys, the former Räucherei Hopp still has its original Altona-style smoke ovens and has been open as a live museum since 2016.

07
Candy Factory Hermann Hinrichs
The building at Frau-Clara-Straße 22 started life in 1830 as a fish smokehouse, and its tall chimney still stands as a reminder of that past. In 2006, after a two-year renovation carried out largely by the owners themselves, it reopened with copper kettles and more than 100 historic candy rollers, some over a century old, visible through a glazed production area.
