Audio Guide Glücksburg

app, one-time €4.99

Glücksburg is a small seaside town on the Flensburg Fjord in Schleswig-Holstein, best known for its striking white Renaissance water castle that seems to float on its own lake. The town gave its name to the royal house that still sits on the Danish throne, and its mix of dynastic history, glacier-carved coastline, and quiet fjord beaches makes it an unusually layered destination for its size.

    Glücksburg Castle

Built on the foundations of a demolished Cistercian monastery, this white Renaissance water castle was completed in 1587 and gave its name to the royal house that today sits on the Danish throne. Architect Nikolaus Karies set it on a 2.5-metre granite base and surrounded it with an artificial lake, creating the illusion that the building floats.

  • 02

    Holnis Peninsula

What looks like a natural headland was actually an island until 1924, when a decade of diking and draining connected it to the mainland. Today its 360 hectares of cliffs, salt meadows, and beaches shelter 130 bird species as part of the Natura 2000 network.

  • 03

    Sandwig Beach

A storm surge in 1872 deposited the fine sand that now defines this beach, effectively creating the resort by accident. The first spa house had opened that same year, and the adjacent Strandhotel, known locally as the white castle by the sea, followed shortly after.

  • 04

    Flensburg Fjord

Technically a Förde rather than a true fjord, this glacially carved Baltic inlet formed as ice retreated roughly 12,000 years ago and has been settled since the Neolithic era. It stretches 40 to 50 kilometres along the German-Danish border and underpins almost every attraction in and around Glücksburg.

  • 05

    Castle Pond

The 17-hectare lake surrounding Glücksburg Castle is entirely man-made, created in the 16th century by damming two rivers to serve simultaneously as a defensive moat and a fish pond. Archaeological digs beneath its waters have turned up the remains of the Cistercian monastery demolished to build the castle above.

  • 06

    Menke Planetarium

Founded in 1969 by infrared-technology entrepreneur Josef Ferdinand Menke, this small domed planetarium on a hill above the Flensburg Fjord is the northernmost in Germany. Its 6-metre dome seats just 50 people, yet it draws up to 10,000 visitors a year and has been a protected cultural monument since around 2017.

  • 07

    Spring Valley

Duchess Anna Caroline of Glücksburg Castle declared this fjord-side valley her favourite spot in the early 19th century, and the sulphurous Adelheidquelle spring she favoured turned the area into Glücksburg's first tourist hub. A guesthouse opened here as early as 1817, decades before the better-known beach resort took shape.
