Audio Guide Güstrow
app, one-time €4.99
Güstrow is a compact Renaissance town in the heart of Mecklenburg, shaped by ducal ambition and the singular legacy of sculptor Ernst Barlach. Its castle, cathedral, and three Barlach sites sit within easy walking distance of each other, making the old town unusually dense with things worth seeing. The cathedral alone holds one of the most quietly powerful war memorials in Germany.

Güstrow Castle
A fire in 1557 gave Duke Ulrich III the excuse to start fresh, and what he built became one of the finest Renaissance palaces in northern Germany, with Italian, French, and Dutch influences all folded into a single facade. The stag frieze from 1570 and the stucco ceiling from 1620 are still inside, now part of a museum of North German art.

02
Güstrow Cathedral
Founded in 1226 by Prince Heinrich Borwin II, who died the very same year he endowed it, this red-brick cathedral traces the full arc from Romanesque beginnings to Gothic refinement over three centuries of construction. It was consecrated in 1335 and holds two exceptional works: the late-Gothic Güstrow Apostles by Claus Berg and Ernst Barlach's suspended bronze angel.

03
The Floating Angel
Ernst Barlach made this bronze figure in 1927 as a memorial for the dead of the First World War, and the Nazis melted it down in 1937 as degenerate art. The version hanging in the cathedral today was recast in 1953, which means its very existence is part of the story it tells.

04
Parish Church of St. Mary
A lightning strike in 1503 burned this church to its foundations, and the rebuilt tower, completed in 1508, now stands 53 meters tall with a viewing platform that gives the best panorama of the old town. The interior blends original Gothic vaulting with later neo-Gothic additions and the striking Borman Altar.

05
Güstrow Market
The market square has been the civic center of Güstrow since the town received its charter in 1228, and its surrounding gabled houses survived the fires that destroyed much of the town in the early 16th century. The neoclassical Town Hall facing it was assembled by David Anton Kufahl in 1797 and 1798 by uniting four separate gable-fronted houses behind a single facade.

06
Ernst Barlach Studio House at Heidberg
Barlach had this functionalist studio built in 1930 and 1931 near the Inselsee, and he worked here until his death in 1938. A bridge crane inside allowed him to move large sculptures around the space, and the building now holds the largest collection of his work in the world.

07
Borwin Fountain
Put up in 1889 to celebrate Güstrow's new water supply system, this sandstone fountain depicts Heinrich Borwin II clutching the document that gave the city its rights, paired with the Rostock griffin as a heraldic nod to his wider territory. It cost 12,000 marks at the time, roughly 90,000 euros today.
