Audio Guide Fischland-Darß-Zingst

app, one-time €4.99

Fischland-Darß-Zingst is a narrow Baltic Sea peninsula where untouched dune forests, crumbling cliff coasts, and a 19th-century artists' colony share the same stretch of sand. The Darßer Ort Lighthouse has guided ships through treacherous shoals since 1849, and tens of thousands of cranes descend on the Bodden lagoons each autumn in one of Europe's great wildlife spectacles.

    Darßer Ort Lighthouse

Investigations into building a lighthouse here began as early as 1792, yet ships kept wrecking on the Darßer Schwelle shoals for another fifty years before this 35-metre red-brick tower finally lit up in 1849. Designed by Ludwig Alexander Veitmeyer and fitted with a Fresnel lens, it now draws over 100,000 visitors a year to the car-free northern tip of the peninsula.

  • 02

    West Beach (Weststrand)

This 14-kilometre Baltic shoreline inside the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park is still reshaping itself: storm-driven sand erodes Weststrand and deposits new land at Darßer Ort to the north, making the coastline visibly younger than it looks. Wind-sculpted 'Windflüchter' trees lean permanently inland, marking the boundary between open beach and protected Darß forest.

  • 03

    Artists' Colony Ahrenshoop

When painter Paul Müller-Kaempff arrived in August 1889, Ahrenshoop was a fishing village; by 1894 he had built the Künstlerhaus Lukas, a studio and guesthouse specifically for women artists who were barred from entering art academies at the time. The colony he founded has drawn creatives ever since, and its legacy is now housed in the brass-clad Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop, opened in 2013.

  • 04

    Seamen's Church Prerow

The Seemannskirche was built on a raised site between 1726 and 1728 after an earlier wooden church was destroyed by storm surges in 1625 and again in 1694, and it survived the catastrophic Baltic flood of 1872 without damage. Its baroque pulpit altar and historic chandeliers reflect the seafaring community that built it.

  • 05

Crane Rest on the Bodden (Kranorama)

Every autumn, cranes migrating from Scandinavia and the Baltic states funnel through the Bodden lagoons in numbers that make the 78,600-hectare national park one of Central Europe's most important stopover points. The KRANORAMA observation station, opened in 2015 at Lake Günz, lets visitors watch at close range without disturbing the roost.

  • 06

    Fischländer Church Wustrow

The Neo-Gothic church built between 1869 and 1873 stands on an artificially raised hill that was, according to local legend, piled up in a single night by the hooves of the Slavic god Svantevit's white stallion. Its tower served navigating sailors as a coastal landmark long before its role as a place of worship.

  • 07

    Darß Forest

The 5,800-hectare Darßwald preserves a landscape of ancient beach ridges and wet hollows formed roughly 3,000 years ago when sea levels were higher, leaving what were once cliff coasts stranded inland. Parts of the forest around Darßer Ort are total no-go zones for visitors, left entirely to natural processes.
