01
Hohenzollern Castle
Three separate castles have stood on this hill since the 11th century, the first destroyed by a siege in 1423 and the second left to crumble by the 18th century. The current neo-Gothic structure was built between 1850 and 1867 on the orders of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, rising 855 metres above sea level with twin chapels, multiple towers, and walls of Malmstein limestone.
-
02
Treasure Chamber
Established in 1952, the Schatzkammer holds the Prussian royal crown, the uniform coat of Frederick the Great, and other personal effects of the Hohenzollern dynasty. It was set up by Prince Louis Ferdinand and continues to attract up to 400,000 visitors annually.
-
03
Count's Hall
Spanning 25 metres, the Grafensaal features red marble columns, a gilt cross-ribbed vault with dragon motifs, and floors of Solnhofen limestone and Carrara marble. Architect Friedrich August Stüler completed it as part of the 1850-1867 reconstruction for King Friedrich Wilhelm IV.
-
04
Christ Chapel
Built to represent the Protestant faith of the Prussian Hohenzollerns, the Christuskapelle was designed by Friedrich August Stüler and its stained-glass windows were crafted by Heinrich Oidtmann. It stands in deliberate contrast to the older Catholic St. Michael's Chapel nearby.
-
05
Ramp and Eagle Gate
The Adlertor is the formal gateway to the castle, reached by a spiral access ramp flanked by defensive structures. Designed by Friedrich August Stüler and Moritz von Prittwitz, it sets the ceremonial tone before visitors even reach the castle courtyard.
-
06
St. Michael's Chapel
Restorations carried out in 2008 uncovered historical wall paintings that had been hidden for centuries, and the chapel's stained glass includes medieval pieces dating to the 13th century. It is the oldest surviving structure in the entire complex, built between 1454 and 1461.
-
07
Zeller Horn
At 912.7 metres, the Zeller Horn ridge stands higher than the castle itself and has been a protected nature reserve since 1950, preserving rare alpine meadow habitats once used for sheep pastures. The only surviving structure from the 15th-century settlement of Zell that gave it its name is a small pilgrimage church, Maria Zell.
