Audio Guide Landshut

app, one-time €4.99

Landshut is the medieval heart of Lower Bavaria, home to the world's tallest brick church tower and a Renaissance palace that brought Italian architecture north of the Alps centuries before it became fashionable. Every four years the city replays a 1475 royal wedding in full period costume, drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators to its almost entirely intact Gothic main street.

    Collegiate Basilica of St. Martin

Its brick tower stands 130.6 metres tall, making it the highest of its kind anywhere in the world, yet the entire structure rests on 5,000 fir-wood piles driven into the soft ground. Built between 1385 and 1500, it defines Landshut's skyline and was elevated to a Basilica minor in 2001.

  • 02

    Trausnitz Castle

Founded around 1204 by Duke Ludwig I alongside the town itself, Trausnitz served as the seat of the Dukes of Lower Bavaria for nearly 250 years and its famous Narrentreppe staircase is decorated with figures from the commedia dell'arte. The castle still commands the hill above the Isar with its Romanesque and Renaissance layers intact.

  • 03

    City Residence Landshut

Duke Ludwig X visited the Palazzo del Te in Mantua in 1536 and came home determined to build something just like it, making this palace one of the earliest Italian Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. The result, finished by 1543, mixes German structure with Italian frescoes and stucco in a courtyard measuring 27 by 20 metres.

  • 04

    Old Town

Founded in 1204 and protected as a listed monument, Landshut's Altstadt is one of the best-preserved medieval main streets in Germany, stretching in an almost unbroken line of Gothic and Renaissance facades. Every four years it becomes the stage for the Landshuter Hochzeit, a reenactment of the 1475 wedding of Duke Georg and Jadwiga of Poland.

  • 05

    Landshut Town Hall

Three separate Gothic townhouses were stitched together between 1380 and 1503 to form the current building, and the ceremonial hall inside is covered in murals depicting the 1475 Landshuter Hochzeit. The neo-Gothic facade added in 1860/61 was deliberately modelled on Frankfurt's famous Römer.

  • 06

    Land Gate

Of the eight gates that once guarded medieval Landshut, only the Ländtor and one other have survived, and this one owes its name to the riverside landing stage where goods arrived by raft from the Bavarian Oberland. An inner gate that stood alongside it was demolished in 1852 simply to widen a street.

  • 07

    KOENIGmuseum

The museum was built largely underground into Landshut's medieval city wall so as not to disturb the historic fabric above, and its most famous exhibit is the battered bronze sphere that Fritz Koenig had placed at the World Trade Center in New York before 2001. Opened in 1998, it holds over a thousand square metres of exhibition space dedicated to the sculptor who was born in this city.
