Audio Guide Passau
app, one-time €4.99
Passau sits at the junction of three rivers, the Danube, Inn, and Ilz, a geography that shaped everything from its medieval trade wealth to its Baroque skyline. The cathedral here holds one of the largest pipe organs in the world, and the fortress that looms above the old town has never been taken by siege. Compact, walkable, and surprisingly layered, it rewards anyone who looks past the obvious.

01
St. Stephen's Cathedral
After a fire gutted the Gothic cathedral in 1662, Passau rebuilt it in Baroque style and installed an organ that grew to 17,974 pipes, making it one of the largest in the world. The reconstruction, led by Carlo Lurago, produced a 102-metre-long interior that still serves as the seat of the Diocese of Passau, founded in 739.

02
Oberhaus Fortress
Founded in 1219 by Bishop Ulrich II as a show of ecclesiastical muscle, this hilltop fortress covers 65,000 square metres and was never successfully stormed despite repeated sieges over six centuries. Today it houses the Oberhausmuseum and draws more than 70,000 visitors a year.

03
Three Rivers Corner
At the eastern tip of the old town peninsula, the dark waters of the Ilz, the green Inn, and the grey Danube meet without fully mixing, each river carrying a distinct colour visible to the naked eye. The point itself only took its current form after deliberate landfill work began in 1891, shaped further by a local beautification association planting trees in the early 20th century.
-
04
Old Town Hall
The site has been in civic hands since 1298, when Passau's citizens wrested control from the Prince-Bishop in an uprising and established a town hall. The 38-metre tower added between 1889 and 1892 carries 24 coats of arms of the founding states of the German Empire.

05
Glass Museum Passau
Neil Armstrong opened this museum in 1985, which tells you something about the ambition behind it: more than 30,000 glass objects spanning four centuries, housed in a Gothic and Baroque patrician complex where one building is documented as early as 1303. It is recognised as the world's largest museum for European glass.
-
06
Executioner's House
The city's executioner once lived and worked here, carrying out sentences at the Rathausplatz, before the building spent time as a Danube Steamship Company agency and a cooper's workshop. Since 1977 it has been a cultural venue for cabaret and jazz, and its Rococo stucco ceiling and 1619 Renaissance portal have survived all the reinventions.
-
07
Passau Dunce
A grinning medieval stone head bolted to the wall of the district office, the Tölpel likely fell from the western gable of the cathedral during the 1662 fire and became one of the few fragments to survive intact. It has appeared in folk poetry and satirical prints since at least the 18th century, functioning as an unofficial mascot for local irreverence.
