Audio Guide Magdeburg
app, one-time €4.99
Magdeburg sits on the Elbe with more than a thousand years of imperial history pressed into its streets. It was Otto the Great's favourite city, home to Germany's first Gothic cathedral and the oldest freestanding equestrian statue north of the Alps. The city was almost entirely destroyed in 1631 and again in 1945, yet it rebuilt itself each time, leaving a cityscape that layers Romanesque stone, Baroque revival and bold 20th-century architecture.

Magdeburg Cathedral
Germany's first fully Gothic cathedral was built on the ruins of an Ottonian church destroyed by fire in 1207, and it still holds the tomb of Otto I himself, the Holy Roman Emperor who founded the city's archdiocese in 968. Twin towers rising nearly 100 metres make it the unmistakable anchor of Cathedral Square.

02
Magdeburg Horseman
Carved around 1240 to 1250 from fine-grained Bernburg sandstone, this equestrian statue of Emperor Otto I is the oldest freestanding secular sculpture north of the Alps and was assembled from roughly 100 individual pieces. The original has been kept indoors since 1961; the gilded bronze replica on the Old Market is what most visitors photograph.
-
03
Old Market
First documented in 965, this square became the model for markets across Eastern Europe under what became known as Magdeburg Law, a legal framework that shaped cities from Poland to Ukraine. It also witnessed a pivotal Reformation moment in May 1524, when a journeyman cloth-maker selling Luther's hymns was arrested here and the crowd's protest forced his release.

04
Green Citadel
Friedensreich Hundertwasser's last major building, completed posthumously in 2005, replaced a bombed church site with a pink wave of 856 irregular windows, rooftop trees and a courtyard hotel. The 171 trees planted across its terraces and roofs are a literal part of the structure's design brief.
-
05
Waterways Cross
Completed in 2003, the canal bridge at the heart of this engineering junction stretches 918 metres across the Elbe, making it the longest canal bridge in Europe. Ships travelling between Hanover and Berlin cross the river without touching it, sailing over the road and river traffic below.

06
Millennium Tower
Built from laminated timber for the 1999 Federal Garden Show, this 60-metre tower claims the informal title of 'the smartest tower in the world' because its spiral ramp leads visitors through an interactive exhibition covering 6,000 years of science and technology. The site itself has its own aviation footnote: aviation pioneer Hans Grade made the first motorised flight in Germany here on 28 October 1908.
-
07
Eulenspiegel Fountain
Heinrich Apel's 1970 bronze fountain on the Old Market commemorates a specific folk tale in which Till Eulenspiegel promises the townspeople he will fly from the town hall balcony, then simply mocks their credulity instead. The Latin inscription on the column reads 'HIC FVIT,' meaning 'He was here,' and the surrounding citizen heads spout water as if still gaping upward.
